The Role: The apprentice site carpenter will normally work on a building site, preparing and fixing building components, from the initial erection of a new building, through to the installation of all necessary fixtures and fittings.

Qualification at end of apprenticeship: NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Wood Occupations Site Carpentry

Other information: The achievement of this standard will meet the requirements of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Skilled Worker standard, which is widely accepted in the sector as a licence to operate in a skilled construction trade.

Training to be Provided:

The apprentice will learn the carpentry trade with a mixture of site based work, alongside experienced tradesmen and workshop based study one day a week at Crawley College.

 

On completion of this apprenticeship, site carpenters will have the occupational

knowledge to:

 

Understand the technical principles of site carpentry work and how these are

applied to prepare and fix timber and timber- based products, erect inclined roofs, maintain and repair building components.

 

Understand how to form specific joints required for site carpentry work, such as

mitres, butt and halving joints

 

Understand why, when and how health and safety control equipment should be

used when undertaking site carpentry work (e.g. personal protective equipment

(PPE) and respiratory protective equipment (RPE).

 

• Understand how to work safely at height and use access equipment correctly.

Know how to use, maintain and store hand tools, power tools and associated

equipment.

Expected Duration:

18 to 24 months

Skills Required:

Computer literate - must be able to submit weekly timesheets

Qualifications Required:

Level 1 Functional skills in maths and English. Equivalent of a 2 at GCSE

Personal Qualities:

Friendly, polite, reliable, hard working, focused, determined, good listener, sensible

Future Prospects:

Possible progression onto a higher course/ management level.

The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.90 per hour effective from 1st April 2018. This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.
