10 Sussex networking and skills events in 2017

Sussex is a great place to live and work, with towns and cities that are brimming with creativity, culture and careers! So it’s no surprise that there are plenty of networking and skills opportunities to take advantage of throughout the year – many of which are either free or very affordable. We’ve put together a quick 10-bit timetable to give you a flavour of what’s happening near you and the local providers that are involved in the jobs scene.

Apprenticeship matching – NEXT DATE TBC

Considering an apprenticeship rather than a degree route? Brighton and Hove City Council host matching events on a regular basis inside town centre venues so that local employers and training providers can meet local school leavers looking for their next opportunity.

TALENT2017: Jobs Fair – 15 MARCH

Looking to take your first step on the digital career ladder? Searching for your perfect role in one of the fastest-growing industries in the UK? Then the Talent2017 jobs fair is for you! Connect with businesses in the sector to find out what it’s really like in the digital sector, and take part in talks and workshops throughout the day.

Finding summer jobs - what to do and where to look? – 27 MARCH

Find out where to look for summer jobs, including summer internships, at the University of Sussex. The session is open to all students and graduates, which is quite a few of you! The discussion will provide three top takeaways: identify vacancy sources, know your labour market and know how to approach employers speculatively.

TEDxUniversityofBrighton – 29 APRIL

If you can’t make it to TEDxBrighton 2017 (see below), tickets for TEDxUniversityofBrighton are available right now! Discussions will be sparked, and new networking opportunities will be forged under this year’s theme: Destination.

Brighton Digital Women – monthly

A bunch of bright women working in the digital sector decided to set up a women’s network in response to a growing demand for female-orientated networking opportunities in the city. A different theme is set up every month, with an average of three talks per session which all reflect the focal theme. Each session is free and gatherings are usually staged on the first Wednesday of every month. 

Codebar – every week

Codebar is a non-profit initiative that stages regular tech workshops to support growing digital communities in East Sussex and London. Its busy calendar is packed with free workshops, led by some of the biggest and brightest digital companies in Brighton.

Career Transition Network - May Work it out Walk – 17 MAY

If you’re in the midst of a career transition, for whatever reason, and you would like some local support and advice, take to the South Downs this May to join this small, like-minded, career-focused group to chat it through along peaks and ridges, in association with the CIPD Sussex Branch.

Free Jobs Fair – 6 SEPTEMBER

Jobs Fair stages general meet and greet networking events for up and coming professionals across the country. This year, its calendar hits Brighton in September. More details are to be confirmed nearer the date. Leading companies attend these sessions from a wide variety of industries, so this opportunity will provide something for everyone. 

TEDxBrighton 2017 – 20 OCTOBER

TED Brighton might seem like a long way off, but we’re excited all the same! Unfortunately, early bird tickets have already sold out, but stay tuned for general sales later this year. As ever, TED promises an expert and insightful line-up, ready to share career and life tit-bits that are well respected around the world.

FREE training drop-ins – every Thursday

In need of some 1-2-1 advice on everything from using a computer to your general health? Head over to the Seaside Community Hub in Eastbourne every Thursday from 2pm until 4pm to look after your mind, body and financial well-being, funded by the Devonshire West Big Local.
