Event 1-12 June 2013

This summer more than 15,000 visitors are expected to visit the biggest showcase of architecture, fine art, design, film and performance anywhere in the south-east. After years of creative and critical study, over 500 final-year graduates from the Faculty of Arts will show their work at the annual University of Brighton Faculty of Arts Graduate Show.

This free public show will fill the university’s city centre Grand Parade and Pavilion Parade buildings. Works will be sold and graduates receive commissions, as visitors search out those destined to follow the footsteps of alumni such as fashion designer Julien Macdonald OBE or Turner Prize winners such as Keith Tyson and Rachel Whiteread CBE.

Following the popularity of the event in previous years, this year’s opening times have been extended, now giving visitors almost two weeks to explore, examine and engage with the work and the graduates behind it. There will be a range of live performances, static works and interactive exhibitions.

Graduates featured in recent shows have already become recognised names, such as Kyle Bean, Illustration BA(Hons) whose work has been commissioned by Selfridges, Diesel and the New York Times; Fred Butler, Fashion Design BA(Hons), whose fashion accessories have been worn by Lady Gaga and Sigur Ros; and Jade Pybus, Performance and Visual Art Music BA(Hons) whose compositions have featured in a Ford Focus advert and on NME’s website.

Some of the Faculty’s upcoming graduates are already making their mark. Designer Emma Whiting recently featured on the BBC Radio 4′s Today programme discussing her groundbreaking design and craft work.

Puma images emerge on these shoes as they age – a design by final year student Emma Whiting, Design and Craft BA(Hons)

The 2013 exhibition will be open to the public from Saturday 1 June and close on Wednesday 12 June at the Faculty of Arts, University of Brighton, Grand Parade, Brighton, BN2 0JY.

Grand Parade:
Thursday & Friday 10am–8pm
Saturday & Sunday 12–5pm
Monday to Wednesday 10am–6pm

Pavilion Parade
(History of Art and Design courses) open 10am–4pm Monday-Friday, 12–5pm Saturdays and closed Sundays

Specific show times may vary. Please note this event is free.

CUPP Events

Description

10 Down 10 to Go! Designing our future

In 2013 Cupp is 10 years old and we will be holding a celebratory event in central Brighton on 8th July starting at 6pm.

As well as celebrating everyone’s achievements our theme for the year is to explore the future vision for Brighton as a community engaged University. Whilst the University of Brighton and community partners have made real strides in the last decade to work together for mutual benefit we are hoping to generate an ambitious vision that will help us develop over the next 10 years.

This event will contribute to this process and will include a keynote talk from Professor Sir David Watson, Principal of Green Templeton College, Oxford and Vice Chancellor of University of Brighton when Cupp was initiated in 2003. David Watson will explore the historical dynamics of the relationship between universities and the communities which founded and sustain them. His core proposition is that communities made universities before universities helped to make communities.Taking Brighton, and the experience of CUPP as an example, he will attempt to analyse how the resulting relationships work at their best, and to identify the key inhibitors of progress, from either side. He will conclude with a series of challenges to CUPP, to the University of Brighton, and to its current and potential partners. (See David Watson’s Biog)

There will also be contributions from university staff, students and community partners who have been instrumental in the work. We will also discuss the challenges and opportunities this presents to a conventional university like the University of Brighton.

The event is free to attend and we really hope as many of you can come as possible.

Outline for the evening

6.00pm

Welcome: Julian Crampton

10 to Go! Future perspectives – interviewed by Angie Hart

A University leader, researcher, community partner and student will be interviewed live to hear their views and vision

David Willetts, Minister for Universities and Science, said Brighton was one of the country’s leading universities to benefit from the cash injection to boost cutting-edge research and innovation projects.

Sixteen schemes will be allocated a share of the money by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) Catalyst Fund to work with business and support the UK’s economic recovery.

The projects are expected to help create more than 500 new companies, 1,200 products and 3,000 jobs – adding more than £3bn to the UK economy.

Mr Willetts said: “Universities and colleges are vital to the UK’s economy. The extra £50m will harness the potential for growth across the regions, focus on our world-class industrial sectors, and create a skilled workforce for the future. It will support cutting-edge innovation and research projects and keep us ahead in the global race.”

The amount of money allocated to the University of Brighton, to be announced at a later date, will support the university’s Green Growth Platform which links the knowledge assets of the university with 1,000 high-growth-potential small-to-medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and private, public and third-sector partners, with the aims of supporting innovation, addressing skills shortages and improving growth in low-carbon environmental goods and services sectors.

It will focus on four areas: sustainable buildings and retrofit; renewable energy; recycling and waste; and water.

The project links two of Sussex’s most dynamic growth areas, Brighton and Crawley, and specifically addresses a key aspect of Brighton’s City Deal – exploiting the potential of the city to be an economic powerhouse in eco-technologies.

Private companies, local authorities and education institutions involved with the University of Brighton bid include: British Gas, Mears, Southern Water, Ricardo, South Downs Solar, Downs Energy, GeoEnvironmental, Eco Technology Show, West Sussex County Council, Brighton and Hove City Council, Crawley Borough Council, Coast to Capital LEP, Central Sussex College, City College Brighton and Hove, Northbrook College, Shoreham Port Authority, Freedom Leisure, Housing 21, Business Support Kent, West Sussex Sustainable Business Partnership, and Bioregional.

The University of Brighton’s project was put together by Zoe Osmond, Business Development Manager for environmental sectors. She said:

“This is exciting news. The university is committed to continuing to support local economic development and the creation of jobs across Sussex. Our proposal builds on our strengths of working in partnership with the private and public sector, supporting SMEs and our own commitment to sustainable development. In addition, it allows us to apply our research and innovation expertise to support the transition to a low carbon economy.

“We look forward to working with partners to help ensure the success of major green economy initiatives, such as the Sussex Energy Saving Programme for mass retrofit of buildings across the county. We have been really pleased by the way this proposal has been received and the support it has attracted.”

This week, please meet Nickova Behling from our multi-lingual Collections team.

“I was first attracted to work for American Express because of the exciting and challenging nature of the role.

The challenge is to collect money in a friendly yet assertive manner and to solve any problems the card holder may have experienced. I have learned useful negotiation skills, and this activity is enriched by the necessity of using dual languages: speaking German and writing/speaking in English. For me this means staying in touch with my mother tongue, German.

Robots of various shapes and sizes roamed the hall and entertained guests, who were invited to try to race the smallest size (the antweights). Guests were reminded of the importance of Crawley STEMfest by keynote speakers Councillor Bob Lanzer, leader of Crawley Borough Council, and Ian Thornton, SVP EAME Region, Subsurface Imaging, CGG Services (UK), the event’s headline sponsor. There was also a video created by first year media students at Central Sussex College.

Crawley STEMfest takes places in schools and colleges, in STEM Clubs and throughout the community during the summer with the aim of encouraging young people to undertake further studies, and to consider careers, in STEM disciplines. The event also helps forge links between students and their teachers and representatives of businesses and other organisations active in STEM areas.

Upcoming events include a robot display at the opening of Crawley Festival, and an original theatre piece combining real scientific research with entertainment. Crawley STEMfest culminates in the Big Bang South East at the Hawth on 2nd July. Up to 3,000 students and their teachers will take part in an action-packed day of shows, interactive demonstrations and hands-on workshops.

Crawley STEMfest is organised by STEM Sussex, the outreach department of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Brighton, in partnership with Crawley Borough Council and Central Sussex College.

The event tasked senior executives from Universities, FE Colleges, local authorities and training providers to identify recommendations to put to the Board of the Coast to Capital LEP on the topic of ‘Skills for Growth’. These will then be fed into the new Growth Strategy Plan that the LEP is preparing for their region on behalf of the Government.

Ron Crank, Chief Executive of the Coast to Capital LEP, said “Education providers will play a key role by helping us achieve our goals of stimulating business growth, innovation, productivity and employment levels. This collaborative seminar gave us the opportunity to listen to those developing skills at the frontline and to better understand the different perspectives.

This input will help us to create a robust skills strategy and action plan which will increase the links between education and business, so that economic growth is not hindered by a lack of appropriately skilled, employment-ready people. Furthermore, we need to work together to address the problem of careers advice and youth unemployment – collaboration is key to encourage fresh thinking in this important area.”

Five full-time construction students from Central Sussex College have been given a boost by local businesses who provided them with real on-site experience, under a new scheme launched by SummitSkills.

The Test Drive Talent scheme – developed by the sector skills council for building services – is encouraging plumbing and electrical companies to let a part-trained student join them on site for ten days or more, providing them with a valuable chance to put their skills into practice and learn from professionals in a work-based context.

Five students have now completed placements with one of four local companies; Diamond Electrical, PlumbJob, Phillips Electrical and Mears, who act as contractors for Crawley Borough Council.

Two of the companies that participated in the scheme are now hoping to offer apprenticeship positions to the students they hosted, and following its participation in the Test Drive Talent scheme, Mears is also in discussion with Central Sussex College to develop a formal work experience programme for the College’s construction students.

Peter Bailey, Skills Adviser for Construction and Building Services at Central Sussex College, says: “As the success of this first phase of the Test Drive Talent initiative has shown, giving a trainee the chance to show what they can do in a real work situation boosts their confidence and gives them a really good understanding of the industry. It also provides a glimpse of where their skills can take them once they complete their training.”

“The College’s Job Shop is looking forward to working with Mears and other local construction businesses to build on these valuable work experience opportunities.”

Mears was presented with a Test Drive Talent Youth Pledge Certificate by Edward Fendt, Chair of the SummitSkills Employer Forum for its commitment to helping young people receive training in the workplace.

The students who took part received certificates from Dean Wynter, Director of Construction at Central Sussex College. They are all undertaking plumbing and electrical training at the College’s Crawley campus, which offers the largest and best equipped facility of its kind in the local area.

Student Jamie Thompson said: “The Test Drive Talent scheme has been absolutely brilliant and has really helped bridge the gap between College and work. I’m hoping to start my apprenticeship soon.”

If you run a local plumbing or electrical company and you would be able to provide a part-trained student with work experience, please call Peter Bailey on 0845 155 0043 (press 4).
