Purpose of Job:

To work as part of a team within Transport, contributing to and supporting the Parking Services Team at Hove Town Hall To deliver excellent customer service and support the audit requirements of the team To undertake the Business Administration/Customer Service – Level 3 qualification and Functional Skills (if required) Principal Accountabilities:

  • Issue all Brighton and Hove City Council permit types and Professional Carer Badges in accordance with the regulations of the scheme, and account for all monies received
  • Learn to contribute to the maintaining of the Resident Parking
  • Waiting Lists and forecast the likely availability of permits to members of the public
  • Learn to advise the public on the rules relating to waivers and dispensations and ensure they are issued and accounted for in accordance with the regulations of the scheme
  • Learn how to interpret and apply legislation relating to the Bus Lane Regulations and Traffic Management Act 2004
  • Apply fairness and consistency when learning how to deal with Penalty Charge Notice appeals via post or e-mail in accordance with guidelines
  • Learn how to and carry out all administration in connection with the Blue Badge Scheme
  • Receive payment for Parking Permits and payment of Penalty Charge Notices and issue receipts as necessary, learning and having  due regard to audit requirements
  • Learn how to respond to verbal and written enquiries and produce information regarding parking schemes, ensuring customer satisfaction
  • To deal tactfully with all telephone enquiries or personal calls from members of the public, other officers, contractor staff and elected members and process these in accordance with the set procedures
  • To advise the Supervisor of any work which cannot be completed or resolved within set deadlines
  • The post holder may be required to work in the Parking Information Centre in Hove on within the framework of Monday to Saturday.

Desired skills  

The essential skills for the role include:

  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the use of IT, including spreadsheets, databases, email and web-enabled systems
  • Word processing experience (preferably Microsoft Windows) Experience/willing and able to gain experience of maintaining a data base and spreadsheets
  • Experience of/willing and able to gain experience in general office tasks such as filing, maintaining a message book, acting as a receptionist
  • Ability to use Information Technology and software programmes
  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to the principles of Equalities and to be able to carry out duties in accordance with the Council’s Equalities Policy  

Personal qualities  

The essential qualities for the role include:

  • Able to participate effectively within a team environment
  • Able demonstrate a flexible approach to duties and work on own initiative
  • Excellent literacy and numeracy skills with an ability to work accurately and pay attention to detail
  • Ability to keep information confidential and to work in a data sensitive environment, under the guidance of managers
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to maintain office systems and procedures, prioritising and co-ordinating a wide variety of tasks within a team environment and meeting specific deadlines
  • Ability to work methodically, and with a high level of accuracy, paying great attention to detail
  • Ability to be a good team player, to work flexibly within a team, supporting colleagues and to adjust to changing priorities
  • Ability to relate well to the general public
  • Good communication skills with the ability to be proactive within a constantly changing environment  

Desired qualifications  

The essential qualifications for the role include a minimum of GCSE maths and English Grades A-C, 4-9 or equivalent.
