Job Details

Martell's International Removers is a family run business with several different areas including removals, shipping, warehousing and storage.

Our removals, warehousing and storage is based in East Grinstead. The area of the business that you will be most involved with is removals where we cover local, national and international moves for domestic and commercial customers.

We are offering a Removals Operative Apprenticeship working as part of our Removals, Shipping and Warehousing Team.

This is a very varied job role where no two days will be the same! From working in our Warehouse where you'll be preparing goods for distribution to being part of a removals team helping our customers pack and move home to local, national and worldwide destinations, plus a whole range of other duties in between, meaning there is plenty to learn and experience.

A list of some of your duties are below:

  • Working at customers premises to move their furniture and other effects onto and off of our removal vehicles as part of a team. This includes local moves and also some long distance.
  • Packing of client personal effects into boxes as part of a team
  • Deliveries to customers of items purchased in our department stores
  • Warehouse duties to include packing and preparing goods for distribution
  • Keeping our vehicles clean and tidy both inside and outside
  • Preparing inventories of goods being placed into storage
  • Loading of unwanted items and general day to day waste onto vans and occasionally taking the same to a local tip for disposal as part of a team

Monday to Friday, usual hours are 7.45am until 4.45pm with an hour for lunch although this may need to be flexible to accommodate the needs of the business.

Future Prospects

On completion of the apprenticeship, Martell's will look to offer permanent work providing the work is available and the apprentice has demonstrated a good work ethic during their apprenticeship.

Benefits

Once you have passed your probationary period, we can offer additional personal and career development training which can include fork lift driver training and industry standard qualifications delivered by the British Association of Removers.

Additionally, if you would like to progress to driving for us, we are happy to discuss a package to help you learn to drive and take your driving test which can lead to additional responsibilities and an increase in pay.

Training to be Provided:

With support from Crawley College, the Apprentice will develop and maintain examples of their work to meet standard criteria within an electronic portfolio.

Attendance to maths and/or English sessions if applicable.

The option to attend behaviour workshops to cover key elements of the behaviours set out in the Standard is advisable.

Gateway:

After the completion of on programme training and in consultation with all relevant parties, when you are considered to have demonstrated the KSBs required of a competent Supply Chain Operative, their EPA will be booked. This must happen at least 12 months and 1 week into the Apprenticeship.

You cannot proceed through the gateway until the following elements have been achieved:

• Level 2 in Maths and English

Expected Duration:

Skills Required:

A willingness to learn and ability to perform the tasks required in the job description

Qualifications Required:

None. If Grade C or above is not achieved in English, Maths or IT, attendance of functional skills sessions will be required.

Personal Qualities:

A willingness to learn new skills and to work as part of a team, good communication skills are essential as well as being able to follow instructions whilst adhering to safety regulations.

Future Prospects:

On completion of the apprenticeship, Martells will look to offer permanent work providing the work is available and the apprentice has demonstrated a good work ethic during their apprenticeship.

Other Important Information:

All applications must be made through Apprenticeship vacancies. Do not contact the employer direct as this may result in your application not being considered. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.

Reality Check:

You will have an early start, usually 7:45am. We need you to be able to arrive in good time to be ready to start your shift. Part of the role is manual handling which will require you to lift and carry items on your own and as part of a team.

Crawley College Apprenticeships

Crawley College, part of the Chichester College Group, has the highest achievement rate for apprenticeships in Sussex (National Achievement Rates Tables in 2017/18).

Why choose an apprenticeship?

  • You can earn while you learn – as an apprentice you earn a salary and get to work alongside experienced staff who will help you to develop job-specific skills.
  • You gain practical and relevant work experience – every apprenticeship program is tailored to specific job roles which means you know you will be receiving relevant training. You will also spend time ‘off-the-job’ which is undertaken outside of the normal working environment.
  • You will boost your career prospects – you will develop key skills that employers within that industry really want. It will also help you enhance your longer term career prospects and earning potential.
  • You will achieve sought-after qualifications – you will not only gain practical skills and experience, but in most cases a nationally recognised qualification.
